100 People You Bribe Before You Die!
"On 31st October 2012, I got a call from this gentleman saying, “I urgently need Rupees two Lakh by 2 O’clock this afternoon”. On my asking about the urgency, he said, “I have to pay a bribe to the magistrate for forwarding the land freehold papers”. I was dumbstruck and asked him why he is giving in to such corrupt practice. He said he finds himself helpless as he may be on the surgery table anytime next week and was unsure about the state of health after the surgery. Having lost his only teenage daughter in an unfortunate accident couple of years back, he desired to leave some money for his wife. I could very well gauge the sense of helplessness and pain in his voice. Despite my willingness to help him in this process I could see that even my efforts were of little help in getting the work done. So I immediately headed to the bank and handed the cash of 2 Lakh rupees to this gentleman".
This report from a person in New Delhi had us sympathise with him.
What would you do before you head to the surgery table with an uncertain future? You possibly would go after everything that you dreamt all your life. Bribing an official for an unfinished task is the least you would think of. But here is an incident narrated by a citizen whose friend did exactly this.
