Honesty Can be Deceptive

Posted on April 26, 2013

"The SI Mr.Nagraj helped me greatly much beyond his authority he spoke to the tenants and gave them deadlines to vacate. I also noticed that he did this for everyone who approached for help without any expectations. It was very interesting to watch how the other officials in the station hated him as they missed their chance to harass and squeeze a bribe out. I met him a few weeks ago as part of the Traffic police, and I was surprised to find that its considered to be a demotion to be transferred to the traffic department."

‘Honesty is the best policy’ is an age old adage that has long been a part of our moral science syllabus since the day we entered school. Who would’ve thought honesty was a concept that existed only within text books. How ‘best’ is the policy of honesty anyway, in a country where it can take you ten steps behind on the success ladder.

While morality and uprightness are underscored as the right path to life, such incidents often make us question the very logic behind imparting lessons on concepts that will be publicly junked one day. It is merely a double egded sword that could help you strenghten your individuality but the weak moral fibre of our corrupt society does more damage than good for sticking to this virtue.

This police officer from Bangalore was demoted from a sub inspectors post to the traffic department. No prizes for guessing why!
