New Age Values
“I went for admission for my daughter in government school and there they asked me money. So i paid money and got seat.”
Finally, a department, other than the police, has emerged as competition for being more corrupt. It saved the content team from doing the monotonous job of berating the corrupt police department for sinking deeper into the gorge. The team realised that departments, other than the police that are equally corrupt, do exist.
No, we are not talking about the stamps and registration or the passport department. You know that certain social institution that is vital for the development of the country’s future- that involves the education system of the entire country where ‘temples of knowledge’ are an integral part of the country’s development- not only in terms of economic growth, but also as a society.
As it turns out, even the future of a child or the entire country doesn’t come for free. For there are beggars galore, in every sphere. Even the dingiest of places in this country are rife with greedy pigs waiting to squeeze every last penny out of the victim.
Without deviating from the point any further, let us take a look at the deteriorating condition of the one important pillar that could help prevent this country from completely drowning in the cesspool of corruption. With the admission season just over, the glimmering in the eyes of parents, full of dreams for the future of their children got dimmer because of the money they were forced to expend in order to secure a seat in the most reputed schools and colleges. Educational institutions today are resorting to dubious ways of improving their financial prospects.
The amount our parents may have spent on their entire education is nothing compared to what present day parents are made to pay for their child’s kindergarten seat alone.
Whether it is to admit ones ward into primary school or whether it is to secure a seat in a reputed engineering college, parents have to grease the palms of the management. The ingenious methods devised by some of the schools/ colleges makes them worthy of mention.Take this for instance-
“They asked (me) to pay 50K and that too from other person's account whose surname should not match with my son. Smart and cheat guys.” a parent posted on our website.
What right do our teachers have to stop students from indulging in malpractices if the school management itself does the same? (Not that I’m encouraging students to indulge in malpractice). The value that children take home with them is this-Having double standards is not such a bad thing after all.
Merit is a concept that has become obsolete. The reason why we are producing ill qualified professionals is precisely this-Engineering and medical seats are no more positions to be received on merit, but are merely objects to be bought and sold. Who said hard work can lead you up on the ladder of success? A few thousand, maybe lakhs, in rare cases crores can do that much faster. The value imparted is this- shortcuts are better than real hard work. Who cares about meritorious students who couldn’t buy their seats in good colleges or schools.
If you paid a bribe to secure a seat in a school or college for yourself or for your child, tell us here by taking this poll.
