One Person's Greed, Another Person's Loss

Posted on March 05, 2013

I offered to "do" whatever he wanted me to do. he asked me to give Rs5000 to another guy standing in the room. I gave it. He asked the other man to go find the passport and he brought it out in less than 10 minutes… And even then I did not receive my passport in time to be able to make the trip… I would've had a different career if I'd been able to go on that trip.

Many a time, greed for money clouds the judgement of our respected government officers. So much so that they ignore the sense of urgency with which applicants approach them to their job done. One such passport applicant narrates how he was made to cough up thousands of rupees to secure the vital document that could help advance in his career. Unfortunately the officer’s apathy towards the applicant led him to miss the opportunity of flying abroad as the hefty bribe didn’t satiate the passport officials greed. It’s a pity how officers refuse to acknowledge the importance to finishing a procedure on time.
