Poll Analysis | Degree certificate attestation

Posted on August 27, 2012

The attestation of degree certificates is mandatory for those seeking admission in post-graduate courses or overseas jobs. Gazetted officers are authorized to attest these documents, but in most cases these officials expect a bribe in exchange.

I Paid a Bribe conducted a poll asking our readers whether they paid a bribe to get their degree certificates attested. The results of the poll are as follows: 66% readers got the job done without paying a bribe while 28% were forced to part with their money to get their certificates attested. The remaining 6% resisted paying a bribe to government officials.

A complainant from Hyderabad posted his experience in which he had to pay Rs 600 to attest his certificates before applying a post-graduate program in Engineering course while another complainant from Chennai resisted paying a bribe to peons and gazetted officers who sought Rs10 for a signature.
