Poll Analysis | The Black Job Market

Posted on November 26, 2012

The Indian job market has witnessed a slump for the past two years, especially after the American economy was hit with acute recession. Even though the Indian market was superficially affected, finding employment has been a tad bit difficult for Indians.

Recruitment agents, consulting agencies and other middlemen have taken advantage of this by promising candidates impressive jobs abroad or in the country. These jobs come at a price as the agents quote high prices in exchange for jobs.

Many a time, vulnerable jobseekers desperately looking for employment fall into the net and end up paying the demanded bribe. The question is regardless of how desperate one is to get employment, should one compromise on their values and bribe touts to secure a job?

I Paid a Bribe conducted a poll asking its readers, “Would you pay a bribe to secure a job when you’re in dire need of employment?” 42% of the readers expressed willingness to bribe their way into getting a job whereas 43% readers staunchly believe in not paying a bribe for the same. The remaining 15% expressed scepticism and do not have a concrete opinion on paying a bribe.

The unemployed population can hardly be blamed for being susceptible to falling into the bribery trap, owing to the desperation they face. According to a report published by Business Today, middle men and sometimes, even employees of well-known companies entrap college students seeking placements. It seems to be taking the shape of a lucrative business that thrives on desperate people hunting for employment.

Stability of the economy and the job market is crucial in order curb this menace. And hopefully this helps create awareness among citizens applying for jobs to be cautious of corrupt middle men and consultancy agencies.
