Poll Analysis | Bribes for Khata Registration

Posted on July 13, 2012

Reports on our website show that if you want to register your dream home, you have to burn a hole in your pocket. Till now, we have received 2,175 reports of bribes paid to the registration department. A majority of the reports around 50% of these have come in from Bangalore.

We carried a poll on our website, “Have you paid a bribe for the khata registration of your property?” 63 per cent of the people confessed to having paid a bribe and 37 per cent didn’t pay a penny for it.

A Bangalorean posted on our website, he had to pay Rs. 22,000 as bribe for registering new purchase of property and Rs 10,000 for Khatta certificate.

Another Bangalorean, wrote to us saying, he paid Rs. 5,000 for transferring the khata of his flat. His flat when came under the jurisdiction of BBMP, the officer of the corporation taking advantage of his condition charged him with Rs. 5000 just to give the khata which officially takes only Rs. 150. As the person was pressed for time, had to bog down to the officers and paid the demanded amount.

In fact many people expressed their helplessness on our official Facebook page and reported many instances where they bribed government officers for registration of their khatas.

A respondent on our Facebook page reported that he had to pay Rs. 2,000 to registrar. If he failed to comply, they threatened to “ keep my file for 1 month as computer is not working to put those entries.”

Is it possible to obtain a khata certificate without paying a bribe? This story of a bribe-fighter shows that if you have will power, you do not need to grease the palms of the corrupt officers. He went to the local BBMP office on eight consecutive working days and got his job done without the payment of the bribe.
