Poll Analysis | Bribes for legal heir certificate

We asked a question to our viewers, “Have you paid a bribe to procure a legal heir certificate?” 73 per cent of the people admitted that they had to bribe to get their legal heir certificate, while 27 per cent did not have to pay a single penny.

Every day our site receives hundreds of complaints against Municipality Department and Registration Department from various parts of the country. Our site has received 2,177 complaints against the Registration Department. A majority of the reports, around 50% of these have come in from Bangalore.

After his father expired, a person from Theni, Tamil Nadu had to pay Rs. 2,000 to Village Administrative Office, Revenue Inspector and Tahsildar as bribe to get his legal heir certificate. He wrote to us, “I tried to be as honest as possible until the death of my father.” 

Another person from Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu had to pay the Municipality a sum of Rs. 1,500 as bribe to get his heir certificate. As he was unaware of the legal procedures to obtain the certificate, the government officers exploited his miserable condition to bag some money. In his complaint, he wrote to us saying, “This incident which happened to get a legal heir certificate is the worst that corruption can lead to a common man.”
