I insisted on legal procedure. Policeman kept me waiting 1/2 hour.

Reported on March 28, 2011 from New Delhi , Delhi  ι Report #32254

Returning from Singapore on holiday, I brought my laptop with me. I had bought a camcorder as well. The Policeman at the gate who receives filled slip which we get on immigration card, thought of it an opportunity for bribe. He told me all your stuff will need to pay excise tax. So I said yes off course if it is so, we definitely can go through the standard legal procedure. He made me wait as he let the other people pass by. (Almost all of my electronics were all used and I know that they harrass the people by billing strange amounts and charging illegitimate tax. My friend had suffered while carrying a PC earlier.) I still kept on waiting and I was requesting him to accompany me to the appropriate department so that we can proceed legally. I knew my stuff isn't worth more than 25K at all but was scared of these people's regular harassment technique.

To my amazement, after waiting half an Hour, the guy let me go. I know he was aware, there wasn't anything legally wrong against me - just only they can frame me unnecessarily. He made me wait for half and hour plus just anticipating some backdoor bribe which I refused to pay coz I wasn't wrong at all. Other than my wasted time and frustration, it was good feeling later that if you are strong and clean with truth, these corrupt thieves cannot harm you.
