Paid a bribe to traffic policeman

Reported on June 15, 2011 from Ahmedabad , Gujarat  ι Report #7978

I was coming from Kalupur Railway station and was not wearing helmet. I was stopped by traffic police and when he asked for PUC-license, I realised that I don't have PUC either. Cumulative fine was 100 Rs. I requested officer to settle down with 50 and put it in his pocket. After much negotiation, officer agreed and I ended up paying a bribe of 50/- compare to official 100/-.

Moral of the story: I think unless people don't stop bribing, this menance is going to get bigger and bigger. Reducing the fine is not an option. Instead, the fines should be so high that people should be afraid of breaking the laws. Look at western countries... The people are so disciplined and fines are extremely high for petty reason's. If i talk about California, they fine $450 for jumping red signals. $371 for talking on phone while driving. And this rates are published in their yearly handbooks and they just keep increasing. No tolerance is accepted. Also, other reason that lures Police officers to accept bribe is their low wages and disrespect in eyes of public. Unlike in western countries, this kind of jobs typically are consider most lucrative as well as this officers are treated as celebrities here. I think we do a lot of research into how developed nations are able to keep their bribery levels low.
