Bribe asked for in Jaipur

Reported on June 16, 2011 from Jaipur , Rajasthan  ι Report #31817

We were stopped in Jaipur by police for going down the wrong way of a makeshift one way street. In fact, the street was a two-way street. The police had set up a small sign off to the side of the road that was hardly visible indicating that it was a one-way street. When we were stopped by the police, they requested our driving license. When we asked why we were being stopped, the police indicated that he was going to fine us 800 Rs for refusing to show our license. As we went to pull over, the police said "Just give me 200 Rupees and you can go". We did not pay the bribe, but spent the next 40 minutes appealing to higher levels of police. In the end, we paid a 100 Rs fine for going the wrong way but we had notified the higher officers of the policeman who had asked for the bribe.
