Had to throw names to resist bribe

Reported on July 26, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #31705

I had landed at Mumbai airport from an international flight and was asked what I had brought from abroad. This was in 2003 and all I had was the usual stuff - laptop, camera and some cosmetics and perfumes. Nothing great, nothing that you don't get in India. The guy on duty shamefully said that I will have to pay something to get past customs. I tried to reason with him and eventually had to tell him my uncle's name who at that time was a senior customs commissioner. So this guy got very annoyed and embarrassed and told me - agar aap kisi ko janti hain to pehle batana chahiye tha (if you know someone influential you should have mentioned this before).
If I didn't drop names I don't know how much I would have had to pay...
