Politely declined to bribe-managed to register property!

Reported on November 16, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #32631

We went to the Kumarapark West BDA office to register property that we'd bought from the BDA itself. We went personally without any bank/builder/agents etc. After most of the work was done the computer officials took us to a back room. My husband and I knew what was going to happen. They kept insisting that they were not 'asking' for anything but they've been so helpful, and we need to pay 'Sir' fees. We agreed that they had been helpful (coz' they had) and offered to write them a letter of recommendation. After some more posturing by them , without 'asking' we told them bluntly that we don't do this sort of thing and we would not like it to turn bad for them. They backed off, saying that this has never happened before and people are only too happy to pay.
We told our new neighbours the story and they managed to register without needing to bribe either (they told the BDA people upfront that since we had not paid, they would not either)

Note: months later we found out that there was a technical issue and the registration of the entire building (not just us) ********** need to be redone! Lets see if we manage to do it without a bribe the second time around as well
