Bribe for Vehicle Registration
- Transport
- Registration of Vehicle
- Paid INR 50
I recently bought a two-wheeler and was scheduled to produce the vehicle to the local RTO within a week. To my amaze the local RTO inspector of the Motor Vehicles Department, Salt Lake Kolkata (Sector-V) is charging Rs. 50 via his touts from each person to get their vehicle registered. For each act, be it registering a new vehicle, Driver's License Application and getting Number Plates attached one must pay Rs. 50 every time (depending on the vehicle ; amount is more for four-wheelers) to the touts. The RTO inspector gets the share of this bribe. People are called in early, yet processes are delayed and people are made to stand in queues in rains while the RTO inspector comes out once in a while, sits in an AC car with a cup of tea and takes an inferior 4-wheeler driving test which is a mockery of driving capabilities as he asks the driver to drive and reverse.
Although most of such reports are fruitless, I do hope the concerned authorities notice this and initiate a thorough investigation against this person via the cartel of his touts and get to the root of this corruption.
