This is the second time we were forced to pay a bribe for passport verification - first for my husbands passport and this time my own. The chap came at around 8am, sat down and demanded me to produce a photograph and an amount of Rs 1000. I asked him if this was some fee for verification - he did not reply. I handed him my photo and refused to pay the money. I told him that I am only supposed to give photo and there is no fee for verification and hence I will not pay him anything. He showed me my papers and said that this is not a bribe, but money to keep the officials 'happy' - he showed three pages on which he had to get senior official signatures - and said each signature costs money. When I still refused he said I had no way out and that I would have to pay - he said he couldn't help it - he said its the system that is like this and I have no other option. When I asked his name he did not tell me - he looked mean and I finally got scared and handed him the money. I wish I had cameras installed to identify this man but I know he and his supervisors are all involved - someone please get to the root of this and stop these thugs from looting us in broad daylight!
