I think I paid a bribe

Reported on November 9, 2019 from Jaipur , Rajasthan  ι Report #216667

This happend with me in Jaipur at Hathroi Chok on 9th November 2019 between 2-3 pm, when I was stopped by 2-3 traffic policemen for violating 1-way traffic. I was asked to pay a bribe of Rs. 500 instead of the actual penalty of Rs. 1100, but I refused to pay the bribe and instead said I am happy to pay the full amount (Rs. 1100) for my mistake. At this, the policemen said that even Rs. 300 is OK, but I still insisted on paying the full amount.

The policemen reluctantly agreed to make a Challan receipt, and put some details (my name, licence no. and traffic voilation) on an official looking receipt and finally asked me to hand over Rs. 300 (not Rs. 1100 that was supposedly the penalty). I paid Rs. 300, and left the place, but then soon realised that the policemen neither filled the Challan amount in their receipt not gave me a copy of the Challan.

I feel disgusted by Jaipur police's behaviour; it felt as if I was tricked by a bunch of cheap thugs.
