The most disgusting aspect of policing is moral policing. The same cop who leches at me when I walk the streets and ignores me when I complain about an eve-teaser is a sudden protector of morals when I engage in consensual contact with my boyfriend in the city.
On numerous occasions we have had to pay off cops who will raise an issue with us merely sitting in a car or sitting by the beach. The standard demand is for Rs.2500 (the official 'couple's charge') which eventually gets haggled down to anything between Rs.100 to 300, depending on the number of cops.
Locations of bribe paid:
- Worli Sea Face (single cop)
- Bandra Reclamation Flyover (2 cops on a bike)
- Hanging Gardens (about 3 or 4 cops)
The bribe is often the only option as the threat is to either call your parents or a receipt for Rs.2500 which is not a sum I tend to carry around with me. I wonder whether this classifies as a bribe or perhaps just extortion.
