Mumbai Traffic Police Law

Reported on June 12, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #7548

Hi ,

This is strange law within Mumbai Traffic Police where your licence is confisticated for traffic violations.

I had crossed the signal in orange light, rather than sudden braking which in the law is correct (red light suggests to stop). However the cop halted me for breaking the signal. Rather than arguing with the cop, I was willing to pay the fine. The Traffic personal at the junction had suggested that the licence would be kept and to come and collect it the next day until next 2 weeks , rather than give me a receipt and closing the case.

As I work in Pune and was on a visit to Mumbai , it was not practical for me to come personally and collect the licence. Hence the only option was to bribe the cop which was readily accepted.

The system itself has been made to encourage kickbacks.

Request someone please look into this rule so that fine on minor offences is dealt with immediately or some points based system issued on the licence so that police don't find it easy to bend the rules.

Also there needs to be some tight monitoring (cameras) so that traffic cops do not unnecessary hassle the public
