I have heard of many stories of bribes. The art of bribing is getting more and more creative. Once I asked my friend to write a book with the title "The Art of Corruption". and have in it a compilation of short stories of the creative ways of corruption. With the digital age your website can serve that purpose. Many times people want to remain anonymous for fear of retribution. So please start a new category called "I heard of a bribe".
My story.
My accountant visited India for six weeks and returned two weeks ago. He had a great time visiting different cities and meeting with friends and family. Being a CPA he has many friends in India who are Chartered Accountants. His CA friends told ********** that he would never be able to survive in his profession in India because he is too ethical.
This is the transaction they cited. The CA is meeting with the Income Tax Officer, the ITO tells the CA that your work will be done. The ITO wants Rs 100,000 (One Lac) for himself. I (the ITO) will give you (the CA) $50,000. So ask your client that I (ITO) want Rs 150,000. I will keep Rs 100,000 and give you (the CA) Rs 50,000.
You hear of businessmen bribing government employees, this is a unique case of a government official bribing a business professional. So that the professional will never be able to testify against the ITO
My accountant is very professional. Confidentiality is most important in the accounting profession. I believe him and am proud that he files my taxes for the last 20 years and I pay my due share of taxes. I have never paid a bribe to any person in the US in the last 40 years. If an incident like this that I have mentioned had happened in the US, the person or persons would be brought to justice very quickly.
Yet even with the best intentions, I or many others cannot even voice our concerns for fear of retribution. Even living outside the country has perils. This cancer has to be eradicated.
