I decided to go for e-registration. After filing all the necessary forms and making rounds of the sales tax department, I was awarded the certificate. Around 15 days later, today, the officer came to verify the premises. After some small talk, he made a few comments about my application to scare me. Overall, he seemed decent and asked relevant questions and took note of it. However, he had brought another person with him whom I suspect wasn't from the sales tax department. He was dressed casually and seemed to just COMPANY the officer while extracting bribe. While leaving, the officer asked me to pay him the FEES. I protested saying that I have already paid the fees with the government. He resisted saying that if you do not want to pay it's fine, but then the BABUS will block my papers and he will not be able to do anything. So in effect, he was threatening me that the papers won't pass unless I pay him and then he pays the babus. I said I can give 200, 500, 800 so on. But he simply denied to take. He said it's okay if you cannot pay. "Hume bhi bura lagta he mangne me par kya kare hume bhi dena padta he aage babu log ko. Nai toh wo log ye paper atka denge". So, I had to give him Rs.1000 forcibly. Such a waste of the money of a bootstrapped Internet company. Feels ugly.
