Paid a bribe after blowing slightly over the drinking limit
- Police
- Traffic Violations
- Paid INR 3,000
The incident occured at around 1230 AM on 22nd December along Inner Ring Road, Bangalore. After my friends coaxed me to have a few drinks (it was one of their birthdays), I decided to drive to work (night shift) believing I'd had very little and would clear the breatholyzer test. I blew a 42, 2 points over the legal limit of 40.
When I agreed to go about the standard procedure, the traffic police started inciting fear in me saying my license would get suspended for a month, the car would get taken away and that he would add negligent driving, speeding and not-carrying documents into the report (none of these were true. I had my original DL and a copy of the Registration Certficate card). After convincing me that taking the matter to court would be laborious and expensive, the office arranged a person who usually tows vehicles to take me to the nearest ATM and come back with the 'arrangement amount' which was 3,000 INR. This must have been . a regular affair, for I saw other people also hitching a ride from this person to the ATM! I had to get to work and didnt have time to negotiate. So I paid the bribe, collected my keys and documents, and left.
