Paid bribes on behalf of boss to "facilitate" demolition.

Reported on June 22, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #6992

I had been at working with an infrastructure company in Mumbai, when after surveying, an already approved demolition of slums had to be undertaken at Andheri. Now, police presence is required as people become distraught at seeing their homes being demolished, and authorities approve police presence along with the demolition approval.
I paid a bribe of total sum of Rs.10000 to some policemen at Versova police station. On approaching the office of an officer, I told the officer the name of the boss, and he responded that he was expecting me. I took out 6000 out of the 10000 in the envelope and gave to the officer. He said "Sir, we don't ask you for all this.. if you're giving then atleast give a round figure". I handed him another note of 1000.
He then authorised a team of 4 male policemen and 1 woman constable and asked me to accompany them to the demolition site. and indicated to me to give something to the constables as well after the job is done.

Demolition took place without problems, and I handed over 1000 rupee leaflets to each accompanying constable.
Hey, it was my boss's money, but I don't understand what happens to the social structure if the police demand money to DO THEIR *******
