I'm a student in my graduation year. One night, at around 9pm, I was going to a friend's place to give him some notes. I was riding my bike, with my helmet on, at a speed of 30-35kmph. And people have a bad habit of running and crossing the roads here. This guy who randomly appeared from nowhere came in front of my bike cuz he was running to cross the road. Just so that i don't bang into him, i turned quickly to the right and spontaneously hit the front disc brake which made me lose control and skid into a beat-marshall bike from behind with 2
hawaldaars on it who was waiting to take a right turn. The impact wasn't bad but their rear tail light got damaged. They took me to the police station and started telling a senior cop that i was riding rash, when i wasn't. When i tried to explain what exactly happened, one of the senior cop abused me saying, 'chutiya, chup chap beth' (shut up and sit you moron). I felt insulted but i knew i couldn't react cuz they would make the situation worse for me. I was told to pay 1500 rupees as rash riding penalty and 4000 rupees for their bike damage. They called some stupid guy and said he's a mechanic and he says the damage will cost 4000 bucks!! Which police bike tail light costs 4000 bucks?? When i tried to call my friend for help, he kept saying pay the charge soon otherwise, we'll detain you for the entire night and get your blood test done and all that. I got bloody scared and had to pay him cuz i didn't want my parents to know i crashed. He gave me a receipt for 1500 rupees as penalty for rash riding, but the other 4000 they ripped me off! My friend had to come with the cash. I was very angry and sad too cuz i didn't even bribe him, he ripped me off by 5500 rupees just cuz i hit his bike from behind. I didn't even feel like filing a complain against him cuz the way the cops spoke to me at the police station was pathetic. Made me feel like i was some criminal. I hate such people who pretend to be cops and protect the city. Becuase of such cops, even the good cops don't seem good to us. It's very sad.
