Asked for Rs. 5000 for new car registration

Reported on June 22, 2013 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #34727

I am leaving in Mumbai for last 7 years and leaving in rented house with registered leave and license agreement for all the way.

This year due to necessity we have to buy a car. We sat with the car dealer and finalized a new Honda City from an authorized Honda Dealer. He had a checklist of documents needed from our side and we provided all of them with the cheque on the price we decided on.

Out of the blue, sales person asks us for cash for Rs. 5000. As we paid whole amount in cheque and the break-up shown to us included all components with price, insurance and registration. We argued reasoning behind Rs. 5000 cash, he said that for registration they need to give it to the RTO and gave an irrational reason that because you are on rent so it is mandatory. I felt like punching on his face.

I went back thinking about it. I researched about it and found no law like this. I called up Hyundai showroom and asked him about required documents and money needed. He also said that Rs. 5000 in cash without receipt. I got to understand this nexus.

I went back to the Honda’s salesman and discussed with him. Ultimately salesman confessed that this is a bribe that is given to RTO officer. I told him in ONE line -> “I said that where I can pay so much in cheque, paying Rs. 5000 in cash won't hurt but I won’t give bribe and requested him to cancel the deal and return my money.” After salesman discussing with his senior’s came back and said that they won’t take any more money from me.

So, I didn’t pay them the Rs. 5000 as bribe and got my car delivered on initial finalized amount .
