Bribe during Passport Verification
Firstly, i received a call from the HSR police station after a month of submitting my passport renewal application. While the lady cop spoke very sweetly, verified the original documents and attached the verification form with all necessary documents; I was pretty sure the money aspect was soon coming. And there it was!!
Minutes after she finished up the formality, she asked me to accompany her in a chamber inside the police station where 4 male cops were seated. One of them asked me questions like how often do i travel and where and why before mentioning "We will review the documents and send a report to the passport office. There is now fixed amount but you can pay what you want". I was puzzled and taken aback since it was done in such a direct manner. SO I asked them "Fixed amount, meaning?? Pay for what? I have already paid at the passport office. Will I get a receipt??" on hearing this they smiled and said "No fixed amount, you can pay how much ever..jinta apka maan kare". It wasnt as if I had not understood the meaning, but was adamant on not paying any bribe, and what for? Isn't it their duty to verify and the report on time to the passport office?? So I added another line to the lady cop "Kya madam, you should have told me that I need to pay you for this work", post which they said nothing more and told me that I can go. I'm hoping that my passport is not withheld due to the above communication!!
