Bribe for importing TV from Bangkok

Reported on March 29, 2011 from Hyderabad , Telangana  ι Report #32247

It is common knowledge one is allowed to carry personal non-commerical goods upto a value of Rs.25,000 while returning to India from a visit to a foreign land. At the Hyderabad GMR airport I was halted by the customs for bringing in a TV from Bangkok. The value of the TV was 24,000 and change. By rule i did not need to pay customs. Yet the officer insisted that the TV is a commercial item. To avoid any future litigations i agreed to pay the duty. But the officer had something else in mind, he alleged that my bill was a fake and the TV is worth 88,000 and that im lying. This angered me and we broke into an argument between which he asks me for a bribe. I refused to pay the bribe and told him to retain the TV and said i would take it after the proper formalities and then told him i would for sure complaint against him for asking for a bribe. This might have scared him, cuz he immediately levied me a duty of 3700 and let me go. After coming out i learnt of another person who purchased the same TV and bribed the custom official with *******
