I resisted bribe but in-laws paid

Reported on August 20, 2011 from Ludhiana , Punjab  ι Report #31624

As an Indian living abroad, I am always appalled by the amount of bribery that goes on in India. I witness it first hand each time I visit. If you want anything done by an official, you have to grease someone's palm. I witnessed my brothers and nephews paying to get the simplest things done. I encountered it first hand when I got married and needed a marriage certificate. I went with my wife and in-laws to Ludhiana. I was taken to an office of the official in charge. I was asked to pay x amount of rupees (I cannot remember the sum but I could easily afford it). I said no. I was refused a certificate. My in-laws urged me to pay. I said no. Eventually, they paid behind my back. What ********** Hazare is doing is absolutely amazing. I sincerely hope it makes a difference. Until it does, India will remain a backward, third-world country regardless of its industrial strength or any amount of wealth it cares to generate.
