A policeman called me up on the evening of 21st Jan 2014 for passport verification purposes. After more than a month of waiting for it to b initiated, I was finally relieved. He refused to come home for the verification & asked me to come to the police station. Going through numerous other reports on the website, I knew it was a trap. I tried to make the officer visit my house instead but all efforts failed. I agreed to meet him at the police station & fixed an appointment for 1000hrs.
I went to the station, there were two other officers siting inside. The policeman carried out the process taking signatures & filling up the required fields. At the end of it, he said "Thik hai" (Okay, Done.) and walked me out. It was raining & used it as an excuse to hold me back for a conversation. Before I could walk out, he asked for "chai paani" (bribe - obviouly). I told him that I had just joined job 8-10 months back & that I couldn't give him what he desires. He then went on to say "To yeh witness ke signature bhi to karwaane hai" (I have to get these witness signatures done as well). It was funny actually, that a policeman has the audacity to ask for bribe but doesn't have the courage to ask head on, "Give me cash!" . I told him, that I would get the signatures done & he handed me the form asking me to get it done & bring the money along the next time I come to submit the forms. It is inevitable that I will be asked to shell out bucks the next time I visit. I shall try to dodge it, but in the end, the loss will be mine. My file will be delayed & I won't get a passport.
I was unable to read his name tag as it was covered with a jacket. I do have his mobile number though.
It's always the common man that suffers.
