Traffic Police asked a bribe
I live in USA now and I went to visit my family in India in 2003. During this visit I turned into lower tankbund road (which used to be a two way when I last knew) and immediately realized that it is now a one way. Before I could turn back a traffic constable pulled me over. A break Inspector was right there.
Here is the conversation that took place...
Constable: Do you know this is One way?
I: No... but I just realized it is. I haven't been on this road recently and the last I knew this used to be a two way.
Constable: Give me your Licence
I: I humbly gave him my Licence
Constable: You have to pay a fine of Rs.500 (I don't exactly remember the amounts but you can get the point)
I: OK
Constable: You can pay me Rs.300 instead and I will let you go.
(I had my cousins in the Car watching all this - all 10-20 year old's)
I: How about you write me the Chalan and I will pay the fine of Rs.500 instead.
(The constable was speechless and the Break Inspector who was sitting on his white motorcycle with an ear on our conversation immediately looked at me in shock)
He immediately wrote me the chalan and I paid the fine and boy let me tell you, it was a proud moment for me that I will cherish for the rest of my life - especially setting a good example for the next generation in the car.
