You are Driving Dangerously if you donot pay the bribe

Reported on January 30, 2014 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #39238

I was relatively new in Bangalore then and out with my wife in Indiranagar on my car. Since I didn't stay in Indiranagar, I was following Google Maps and I took a turn on a road not knowing that it was a one way road. It was a Sunday evening and the road was deserted, so I didn't realize that it was a one way. Going about a 50 meters, I saw the traffic cop standing under a one way sign board. Seeing him approaching me, I immediately took my vehicle on the side of the road and stopped it.

He asked me why I was driving on the wrong way. I told him that there is no signal on the turn and the first sign after the turn is about 50 m away where you were standing. He said that there is a signal at the start of the road and you have taken a turn in the middle of the road. I told him that I am new to this area and how would I know if its a one-way there is no sign board? He said that is not his problem and asked me to give him Rs. 300. Not knowing what the actual fine was, I gave up and I started to reach my wallet and requested him to give me a challan. He said the challan book is with his senior and he doesn't have it. I said then I wont pay you any fine without a challan.

He said if you do not pay now, you will get a summon from the Court and I will have to go the courts with an advocate to pay fine in front of the Magistrate (which is total crap btw). I said I will do that, but wont give him bribe. He noted my Car number and taking his permission I left the spot.

Few days after the incident, I see two challans delivered to my home:
1. Driving on One Way/No Entry -- Fine Rs. 100
2. Driving Dangerously -- Fine Rs. 400

I was very angry when I got these challans. As I told before, there was no traffic on the road. No vehicles except my Car. It was deserted. How can I drive dangerously on a deserted road? I drafted a letter to pursue my case with the authorities, my friends said that because I do not have any proofs, my case will not be entertained. So I quietly paid my fine at the nearest Bangalore One center. The price for not paying a Rs. 300 bribe is Rs. 400.
