Just a year back, all in our family were extremely happy as my sister delivered a baby girl. My sister resides abroad and had come down to mumbai for her delivery. I personally had gone to the municipality office at grant road to get my niece's birth certificate done. I requested the officer incharge to issue me her certificate as soon as possible as it was required for her visas. With this situation the officer pounced on the oppurtunity to make some quick bucks... I revisited him after a few days and he told me that its not ready yet. As I was loosing out on time, I went to his office after a few days and told him that I will give you extra money but get my certificate done. In the next 10 minutes I had my niece's birth certificate in my hand. The laid back officer worked like a superman which is unlike a government official. I paid him Rs 150 as a bribe which he readily accepted in front of his colleagues and other people which gives a signal that everyone is involved and happens on a regular basis. The official charge for birth certificate is not more than Rs 100... in terms of percentage I paid 150% bribe for a simple birth certificate...
