Bribe for running past green light

Reported on August 20, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #4371

I was entering mumbai from pune. I was in a cab going to the international airport to catch a flight. At one signal the traffic light was green and the driver passed it normally. Suddenly a copy stopped him just as he passed it and said he broke the signal. He told him it was green and the cop said no it was red. The argument went on for little while then the driver came back to the car and tool Rs 200 and was going to give the cop. I told him that he should not be paying anything as he did not do anything wrong. I was going to go out and tell the cop we are not paying anything, but the driver told me that if I do that the cop will put a case on me and I will not be allowed to catch my flight. So we had to pay the cop and leave. I felt like India was an extremely dangerous place to be. Even though India is my country and I grew up in India, I felt I could not do anything if a cop wanted to rob my in front of everyone. The bribe situation is sick in India and needs to be changed. Any cop or other govt official who is caught taking bribes needs to be deal with very strictly, preferably given the death penalty. Thats the only way the situation will change.
