Had to pay Rs. 40,000 for the partition registration
- Stamps and Registration
- Registration of Property
- Paid INR 40,000
Ours was a combined family until few years ago and after retirement about 16 years ago my dad retired and moved to town.
Even though my dad and uncle were separated they never formally went through the property partition. Few years back my dad passed away. Since then it had become a problem for my uncle to get a agricultural loan as it was a combined property and did not have a partition registration.
As I live outside India, When I visited India recently, I wanted to take care of this issue to help my Uncle. Even though, we have all the property documents from 1930's We still had to pay Rs. 40,000 (1% of property value is the bribe fixed by the sub-registar) as the bribe which was 60% of the actual registration fee. I refused to pay at first but had to give up as I could not stay long in India. I was sickened to my stomach as I knew I was doing wrong but did not know how to fight the system. (Left India 20 years ago). That would have been additional amount I could have happily spent for my village development. It is not about the money but about the principle.
I am sad to see corruption is accepted as a norm in the society and more than ever I felt it in the last few years.
I am however happy to report that in Chennai airport when my son's visa expired I happily paid the extension fee following the system without bribing anybody..It was a joyous moment when I experienced the system work.
I want to do my part to eradicate this social decease threating the country. I feel a bit of relief after telling my experience.
