Paid bribe of 2.6lac on behalf of my company to release the cheques which is meant for the farmers as crop compensation

Reported on August 23, 2012 from Vijayawada , Andhra Pradesh  ι Report #1036

I used to work for a transmission line company which installs, erects and commissions High Tension Towers. The first procedure in the erection of a high tension tower is its foundation. Foundation involves excavation of land. Generally these Towers fall under the paddy fields which are owned by the farmers. Hence, as a compensation the state electricity boards have fixed a particular amount as compensation which is to be given to the respective farmers for the damage of crop. According to the contract, initially the contractor bares the amount which is to be given, which is later reimbursed by the state electricity board. The process for the money to be reimbursed takes a month from the time it is paid to the farmer by the contractor, provided the Superintendent Engineer of accounts dept. signs the cheque. Even to release the cheque which is meant for the farmer, the govt official asks for a bribe. For every 1.5 lakh rupees cheque which is released from the state electricity board, a sum of 10,000 is to be paid to him from the company. According to my estimation, It is startling to know that for all the foundation to be done, he would've earned around 2.7 lac. The sad part about it is, these venal govt officials are least guilty of the act. It is more like getting a bonus for their deeds!
