You help me,I help you

Reported on June 6, 2011 from Gorakhpur , Uttar Pradesh  ι Report #8330

My girlfriend and I were catching the bus from Gorakhpur to Pokhara and had to get our passports stamped on the Indian side before getting our visas for Nepal. The immigration official took our passports and stamped them, but then refused to return them to us. He showed me the passports and said "you help me, I help you", I initially refused and asked for the passports back but I realised that he was not going to return them without some baksheesh. He told me it was 100Rps each passport and as we were the only foreigners around and with no one to complain to we had no choice but to pay!
