Bribes at Customs
- Customs, Excise and Service Tax
- Excise Duty on Imported Items
- Paid INR 2,000
I paid a routine bribe for passage of my Bill of entry ( Import document). When I countered, the Customs House Agent (CHA) told me that this has to be given to officers else I will face trouble. Like me countless others pay 'speed money' daily to Customs Appraisers, Examiners and Assistant Commissioners. Each of these officers earns on the average a lakh rupees a day. Some of them earn multiples of this amount. This is happening despite introduction of self-assessment and system appraisal in Indian Customs. This sets an example that there is no need for hard-work or achievement to make money in India. Just take bribes and you can earn more than any IIM or IIT or most Harvard Business School passouts. You don't need to be an entrepreneur, you don't need to make products that compete globally, just dip your hands in the bribe cesspool.
