On my trip to India 1992
I am of India origin presently living in Canada. I was on my seciond visit to India. At the India/Nepal border when leaving india temporarily I was was singled out form a group of foreigners by immigration official and asked for money,
On my return from Nepal I had to go throught the same process. I paid as I saw no choice. An immigration official approached me there and promised me Indian passports, buying property help with schools etc, He even gave me his card and gave me his home address where I could write to him On the bus from Nepal the vehicle was stopped at least three times by police. On one of the stops an office saw my video camera, asked me to step out and speak to his superior as he would do my 'customs'.
At Agra I met a young man who helped me get a train ticket to Jhansi. Unfortunately we got on a super fast train. At my destination a railway official spotted me, stopped me, checked for my ticket and pointed to my mistake. He now wanted me to pay the train fares to the last station to train would go to. Or he asked me to pay, I paid and he put the money in a box he had placed there. someone ashed him not to but he said he could not let me go.
I could not buy train tickets at some stations, the officiual behind the counter simply ignored me . I was determined not to pay brives so I took buses to places I wanted to visit.
I must say the young man I met at Agra was more than friendly and very helpful. He even asked the passengers in the crowded car to make room for to sit as I was a foreinger in their contry. Not successful but he tried and I remember him for that. This man was on his way home to Bhopal, I am sure he wont read this but I remember him. TYou were returning from applying for a job with the railways. Hope you were *******
