Carrying Indian Currency above Rs. 7500

Reported on July 3, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #6621

I was flying to Colombo by Jet Airways when the lady at the counter which issues boarding passes told me to contact the customs officer after passing thru Emmigration. When i asked her for the reason, she just mentioned that it was a random check. When i went to the customs counter, i was asked how much indian currency i was carrying. It was about Rs. 15,000. I was pointed to a small board which mentions that you cannot carry more than Rs. 7500 out of the country. I asked why the board wasn't displayed prominently, i met with laughter. I had two choices - surrender excess amount (Rs. 7500) or pay Rs. 2000 as bribe. I haggled and paid Rs. 1500 and went off. In retrospect, i should have ignored the lady and shouldnt have gone to the customs counter.
