I purchased an electronic gadget at ebay.com worth $100, was to be delivered to me by USPS(sh*t carrier!), but was detained by the Foreign Post Custom Deptt(near ITO), New Delhi-02. They sent me a letter regarding the detainment & called for my presence, which I complied with. The thin-lean custom officer incharge of checking the goods I had ordered thru ebay gave me two options: either I bribe him Rs.1000 or pay a legal duty of 42% + penalty, 1000 was lesser than 42% + penalty. I dont know what the duty+penalty was for? The officer promised me that he would pass my parcel as a "gift" which is exempted from duty or penalty. The post office staff was well mannered didn't hint for any bribe, but the custom officer behaved as if he was born to pull your pockets!
