I was coming for the first time to my home in Mumbai since I had joined a job abroad and had gifts for my family. The customs had objections to it and they wanted to see the bills for everything. When I could not produce the bills they told me that I have to pay customs to the tune of Rs 20,000. I was shocked but they were not willing to listen and ultimately one of the officers approached me. He asked for Rs5000 for settlement but agreed on Rs 3000. The police on duty was asked to accompany me and I was asked to pay him. The police man took me to one room, took the money and escorted me out. Since then I have been frequently coming to mumbai and everytime I see the customs negotiating with the people and the people going to same room with the policeman on duty. I assume that Mumbai customs is collecting anything between Rs50000 to One lakh a day in bribes
